DescriptionThis book is about the basic teachings of the Native people of Canada, The Seven Teachings. Further sacred teachings are:The four sacred herbs. The medicine wheel.Spirit names and clans. The pipe ceremony. The sweat lodge. The drum. The tipi. The sharing circle, andthe four sacred elements: fire, earth, water and air. These teachings were recorded during the years 2005 till 2010 by Björk Bjarnadóttir, an Icelandic environmental ethnologist and a storyteller. She interviewed the Ojibway Elder Garry“Morning Star" Raven, and worked with him to put his teachings and Anishinaabe heritage and History down on paper. Garry Raven was from the Hollow Water Reserve in Manitoba, Canada. He was an Ojibway elder and spoke the Ojibway language fluently. He always called him self and his people an Anishinaabe which means: the original people lowerd down on Mother Earth by Creator.Garry Raven was also an Environmental activist, traditional teacher and a visionary. He was not only a teacher on his home ground, but also taught in many Schools, Universities and several communities in Canada and the United States.Whilst working with Garry Raven and writing this book, Björk followed his instructions to the letter, mainly not to analyse the text but keep it true to his original teaching. This book is divided into 21 Chapters. The interviews with Garry Raven, Raymond Raven and Flora Ruck have not been altered. Copies of a few of Garry's Medicine Wheels are printed at the end of the book. People are encouraged to use them and to teach them to others. It is also about how we as individuals can reclaim our responsibilities to Mother Earth and how Garry used his Anishinaabe heritage and history in his teachings.“Like the seven teachings that we were given: truth, honesty, love, respect, wisdom, humility and courage. Those are the things we are supposed to live by, and that's all we need to know“. Quotes by Raymond (Black Bear Medicine Man) Raven. Read more
