RARE Antique HUGE 24” African Mali Tribal Carved Wood Dogon Ritual Offering Spirit Medicine Ceremonial Two Headed Horse Box With Lid. This is an amazing piece very large measuring 2 feet length 24” by 10” height by 6.5” depth. The one photo has the ruler with a pen in front to show how big this really is. Overall good shape this was made during the early 1900’s. This has the lid which has a carved lizard on the top. This African Mali Dogon carved wood Zoomorphic Ceremonial Box features figures of people or ancestors. Traditionally, this box is known as an “ark of the world” and is used in harvest rituals to store offerings to the spiritual world. It is said the ark was sent from heaven by the Creator Amma with the eight original ancestors inside. Nommo, a primordial being, guided the ark down and was changed into a horse upon its arrival. The head and tail of the horse are depicted at each end of the box.
